Spring 2017 Update

3/21/2017

It is officially Spring (sort of) ;P

nMarch 20th is the official start of spring, despite the snow piles still blocking many of the corners of the city. This winter was particularly unusual - rather warm, with several mini-springs followed by cold snaps. Why do I mention the weather? Because Chinese medicine emphasizes the environment's role in how we feel and how our body works.

The ideal spring would be one in which the weather warms gradually - with snow melting away, trees sprouting buds, and green shoots breaking up through the ground all to herald the return of the birds, the bees and everything in between. This would allow the Yang of New York to raise upward smoothly, as the Yin of New York sinks downward.

Some of you may have noticed the poor greens that sprouted up a few weeks ago, only to be damaged by our surprise March blizzard. The weather can have a similar effect on us - many of us were shifting into springtime activities only to be caught in extreme wind, cold and damp.

Exposure to wind, cold and damp can lead to things like joint pain, digestive disruption, immune suppression and colds and flus. If you have been feeling off recently, or experiencing a little more joint or body pain, or even feeling a little on "edge", now is a great time to reset your mind, body and spirit - reset for Spring and get things moving smoothly again. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can be the difference between a great run or an achy one; months of a minor reoccurring cold or a couple sick days; feeling ready to take on 2017 or ready to kill someone. Most folks will likely need a little rebalancing given this bumpy seasonal change.

Spring is a time of awaking, emphasizing upward movement and breaking through.  It is a time about changes, forward movement and thinking, and visioning for the future.  It is also a time prone to anger, irritation and stress - so be mindful of these emotions and take a deep breath.
